- 2 January – Attempted assassination of Lee Jae-myung: South Korean opposition politician Lee Jae-myung is stabbed in the neck while visiting the city of Busan.[1]
- January 5 – North Korea fires 200 artillery shells near South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island, prompting evacuations.[2]
