- 1 January – M 4.5 earthquake, 23 km (14 mi) north northeast of Lembang, West Java. Four hundred houses were damaged in Sumedang.[1][2]
- 3 January – M 5.3 Banten earthquake, 60 km (37 mi) southwest of Pelabuhanratu, Banten.[3]
- 5 January – Four killed and 37 injured in a train head-on collision between KA Turangga operated by Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and KRL Bandung Raya operated by KAI Commuter near Cicalengka, West Java.[4]
- 7 January – At 19.00 Western Indonesia Time, the third presidential debate was held at Istora Senayan, Jakarta. The debate discussed issues of defense, security, international relations, globalization, geopolitics and foreign policy.[5][6]
