2024 (MMXXIV) is the current year, and is a leap year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2024th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 24th year of the 3rd millennium and the 21st century, and the 5th year of the 2020s decade.
The year 2024 so far has witnessed the continuation of major conflicts including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Israel–Hamas war, the Myanmar civil war, and the war in Sudan.
This year has been described as the "biggest election year in history" as around 76 countries covering roughly four billion people are expected to hold national elections,[1][2][3][4] including eight of the ten most populous countries (Bangladesh, Brazil, Pakistan, Russia, India, Mexico, Indonesia, and the United States),[1] the United Kingdom,[5][6] and the European Parliament.[7] It is likely that artificial intelligence will influence voters, increasing the possibilties of political disinformation and democratic backsliding.[8][9] Of the 71 countries covered by The Economist Democracy Index, 28 will not have free democratic elections.[1]
